A recent study in the journal Neurology showed that the MIND diet and Mediterranean-style diet (which are both plentiful in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, beans, and fish) likely reduce risk for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This is especially true for green leafy vegetables, which in this study showed there was less AD brain pathology in the brain.

This study was funded by the NIA and followed 581 subjects who also donated their brains to science in an effort to improve research on AD and dementia. Subjects began taking dietary questionnaires (on average) at the age of 84. The researchers then studied the donated brains for amyloid plaques and tau tangles, two protein hallmarks of Alzheimer’s, which showed the promising findings of less AD risk with higher adherence to these 2 important brain healthy dietary types.
