Dr. Richard Isaacson was featured by CNN discussing new research suggesting that the timing of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may influence a woman’s risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The study found that starting hormone therapy around the onset of menopause was associated with a lower risk of dementia, while beginning treatment many years later or after age 65 may be associated with increased risk.
Dr. Isaacson emphasized that the findings support the concept of a “window of opportunity” for hormone therapy and reinforce the importance of individualized care. He noted that decisions about HRT should be made collaboratively by patients, neurologists, primary care physicians, and gynecologists, taking into account each woman’s symptoms, genetics, medical history, and overall brain health.
